When you think about an adrenaline-charged motorcycle ride, the vroom vroom sound is usually part of the picture. But this time, my adventure was charged up - not by petrol, but by electricity. I had the incredible opportunity to try out the new LiveWire Del Mar S2 at the LiveWire Malibu experience.
First Impressions
As soon as I swung my leg over the Del Mar, I was taken aback by its stunning design. Electric vehicles have this uncanny ability to surprise you with that immediate torque, and the Del Mar was no exception. That sheer power when you twist the throttle is simply exhilarating.
Handling? Superb. It's responsive and makes you feel in command. The bike does a splendid job keeping its composure through the twisty canyons. A minor gripe I had was the rear brake; it felt slightly less potent than the front, but overall, the braking is confidence-inspiring.
Having been an owner of the original LiveWire, I can say that comparing the two is like juxtaposing two works of art. While they share the same DNA, they're purposed differently. The Del Mar S2 seems perfect for those city hops - zipping through traffic, perhaps picking up a coffee, or running errands with style.
Nifty Features
One of the highlights has to be the new LCD screen. Not only is it visually appealing, but navigating through the menus is also a breeze. The various ride modes offer versatility, ensuring the Del Mar can be both a wild stallion and a gentle pony, based on your mood.
The Charging Conundrum
Alright, let's address the elephant in the room – the charging. I do wish LiveWire had gone the extra mile to provide faster charging options. While the bike is close to perfection, the charging inconvenience is a bit of a dampener. And then there's the price tag. If it was a tad more affordable, I genuinely believe it would be flying off the shelves.
However, die-hard EV enthusiasts like Diego Cardenas don't seem to mind. He's the proud owner of the 007th Del Mar, and he's head over heels for it. If you've got the moolah, this bike will reward you with unparalleled riding pleasure, head-turning looks, and the satisfaction of going green. Plus, the minimal service requirements are a cherry on top!
A Second Spin
I had another chance to ride the Del Mar at a Roland Sands event. Together with the OG DGR team – Mark Hawwa, Scott Hopkin, and Lord Anthony Partridge – we had an electrifying time. Watching Anthony bond with Del Mar was like watching an artist lost in his craft. It was evident he had become one with the motorcycle, lifting the front wheel, burning rubber, and riding like a man possessed.
Final Thoughts
The LiveWire Del Mar S2 is an outstanding piece of machinery. It's fun, it's electric (literally), and it makes you feel alive. My only qualm? The price. But then again, good things seldom come cheap, do they?
Happy Riding!
